Fred Torres, Cultural Advisor and Kaanapali Alii General Manager


Kaanapali Alii Hotel Manager Fred Torres is also the resort’s Hawaiian Cultural Advisor. He offers a popular Ukulele Class for adults which often include storytelling. Classes are free for guests of Kaanapali Alii and are offered every Aloha Friday from 10-11 a.m. No experience is necessary. Group size is limited.

Fred comments: “As I’m teaching ukulele I often have an opportunity to talk about Hawaiian values such as kuleana (personal responsibility), kokua (care), laulima (working together), and aloha (unconditional love). I enjoy sharing music and stories with guests.

Fred has been both a student and a teacher of Hawaiian cultural practices for over a decade. He was instrumental in the development of a “Hawaiian Sense of Place” program in continuing education & training at the Maui Community College.  Also he has applied his knowledge of Hawaiian values and practices in a variety of important corporate positions within Hawaii’s visitor industry. He studied chant and Hawaiian culture with some of Hawaii’s leading kumu (teachers) and is always ready to share his knowledge when guests of Kaanapali Alii who show an interest.
