The bright blue building across from the Kapaa library is hard to miss. A cartoonish man resembling a young Sean Connery, painted on the façade stands out among the colorless concrete shops and restaurants that line the block. This building didn’t always have such panache. It wasn’t until the Boemors took over in 2010 that their European artistic flair was showcased in their newest endeavor, Art Café Hemingway. Who are the Boemors? Twenty years ago, they were visitors from Prague, who came to Kauai, and felt at home. In 2010 they sold their art gallery, bought a one-way ticket to Kauai and opened the first European café and art gallery on the island. Café Hemingway fuses their European heritage and island mind set together in a bright café that is popular with both locals and tourists alike. Vibe: On weekends locals head in after their morning yoga classes and tourists stop to grab a strong espresso. Sophisticated and cozy, intense artwork adorns the walls and funky light fixtures hang from ceilings. Outdoor seating is available and an art gallery upstairs showcases some of their favorite pieces. In true European fashion they close up shop every January for their annual one-month holiday.
Menu: European luxury can be found throughout the menu from their Italian espresso to delicate crepes and creamy yogurt. They use only fresh vegetables, fruits and organic products where possible. If you find yourself on island during the holidays, they offer special Thanksgiving and New Years Eve tasting menus with wine pairings.
Not to miss: Brunch. Any of their featured plates named after classic Hemingway titles are local favorites. Try In Our Time, an organic egg omelets with fresh herbs, cream cheese, yogurt and a whole grain baguette. $14
