I-Lipo Treatment at Four Seasons Maui

Four Seasons Maui at Wailea Spa offers a variety of traditional and not-so-traditional treatments including procedures one would find at a Med Spa. The new i-Lipo, procedure intrigued me–especially after talking to spa director Pat Makozak. They decided to incorporate this particular ‘fat reducing’ treatment into their program after extensive research. Before choosing the i-Lipo laser system by Chromogenex, the first FDA-approved treatment clinically proven to reduce cellulite, tighten skin, and contour the body, their team looked into the most popular options such as CoolSculpting and other surgical liposuction procedures. Dr. Mark Emerson, a nutritionist and Doctor of Chiropratic, is the wellness consultant for the spa’s Wellness Your Way program. Explaining the effectiveness of the i-Lipo treatment, Dr. Emerson states that while the calories will differ with each individual, the average caloric burn ranges from 400-700 calories of energy (i.e., fat). He hesitates to give an exact number because of variables such as preparation and post work out activities. So, is more better? As in if one were to do this every day for a week, what could happen?  “You could expect to lose more fat with each treatment,” Emerson explains. “The loss is dependent to how much fat the person has to start with. The thicker the fat layer, the greater the measurable loss. Leaner people will have a smaller measurable amount of loss since they are starting with less to begin with. But leaner and thicker people lose a satisfactory amount.”

How does i-Lipo work? “The way the body changes shape naturally,” Dr. Emerson explains, “is to work out so hard that the extra fat is released and is processed through the body. Think of i-Lipo as a kick start to your own natural metabolism. It uses low level laser technology to stimulate the body’s natural process for releasing stored fat from fat cells, thereby shrinking the cells and reshaping the body.”

“While changes can be seen in one treatment,” says Makozak, “eight sessions are recommended to see the “most improvement,” with each session followed by 30 to 40 minutes of cardio exercise.” Each session costs $450, with a kamaʻaina discount of 10% off for Hawaiʻi residents with a valid Hawaiʻi state ID.

Quick note regarding the laser machine. Before you look online for similar i- Lipo lasers, which I already did, I will break the bad news that their machine costs upwards of sixty thousand dollars, and is not at all like the ones offered on amazon.com.
